A French Bulldog — 20–31 lb for males and 18–29 lb for females, non-sporting group, America's most-registered breed in 2025 — costs a typical owner in Texas about $2,491 a year, or $1,451 to $2,590 depending on food, grooming and insurance. That is almost exactly the average for small breeds ($2,578), between the Tibetan Spaniel and the Mudi.
Veterinary and preventive care is the largest line at 33%: 1 exam, core vaccines, heartworm test, dental every 2 yrs, 12 months of parasite prevention. Texas service prices run at 97% of the US average, and at 24.5 lb the monthly parasite chews sit in a middle price band. Food is 18% (682 kcal a day, about 13 lb of kibble a month).
With a top-20 registration rank, breeders, breed-specific rescues and groomers who know the coat are easy to find.
The smooth coat is the cheap part of owning a French Bulldog: no clipping, an occasional bath, and a brush that lasts years. Grooming is 1% of the total at $24 a year.
First-year total: $3,442. Beyond the running costs that includes spay or neuter ($457 at Texas prices) and the puppy vaccine series with its extra visits. The gear list for a small dog comes to $158: a small crate, bed, bowls, walking kit and a carrier.
The median lifespan of 9.8 years (a study of 584,734 UK dogs) is short, which keeps the lifetime total at $25,708 even though the yearly cost is below average. Only about 2 of those years are senior years, each adding $192 in extra check-ups and bloodwork.
Primary-care records for French Bulldogs show stenotic nares in 1.8%, brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome in 5.5%, aural discharge in 2.7% of dogs in a year. None of these is unusual for a dog of this size, which is one reason the breed's costs stay close to its group.
