A Chihuahua — 2–6 lb, toy group, No. 24 of 202 breeds in the 2025 AKC registration ranking — costs a typical owner in Texas about $2,137 a year, or $1,121 to $2,251 depending on food, grooming and insurance. That makes it the cheapest of the 21 toy breeds we track, 14% under the group average.
With a small appetite — 197 kcal a day, about 4 lb of kibble a month, $133 a year — the fixed costs dominate: insurance is the single biggest line at 38% of the total at the US average accident-and-illness premium, adjusted for Texas. Turn it off in the panel and vet & preventive takes over at 37%.
Ranked No. 24 of 202, it is common enough that most vets and groomers see the breed regularly. A high energy rating puts the calorie factor at 1.8× resting energy. The AKC quotes 14–16 years for the breed; the study median used here (11.8) is lower, because it counts every dog under veterinary care rather than a well-kept ideal.
The smooth coat is the cheap part of owning a Chihuahua: no clipping, an occasional bath, and a brush that lasts years. Grooming is 1% of the total at $24 a year.
First-year total: $3,088. Beyond the running costs that includes spay or neuter ($457 at Texas prices) and the puppy vaccine series with its extra visits. Gear for a toy breed is cheap ($158 on our list) but includes a carrier and indoor potty pads that larger dogs skip.
Over a 11.8-year median lifespan (a study of 584,734 UK dogs) the total is $27,000; the final 4 years run about $2,356 each once senior exams and bloodwork are added.
Primary-care records for Chihuahuas show periodontal disease in 13.5%, obesity in 5.9%, retained deciduous dentition in 5.7% of dogs in a year. None of these is unusual for a dog of this size, which is one reason the breed's costs stay close to its group.
