A Cane Corso — 99–110 lb for males and 88–99 lb for females, working group, No. 11 of 202 breeds in the 2025 AKC registration ranking — costs a typical owner in Texas about $3,479 a year, or $2,310 to $3,663 depending on food, grooming and insurance. That is 5% below the $3,671 average for giant breeds; the Great Pyrenees is the cheapest in the group and the Black Russian Terrier the dearest.

Food is the largest line at 42%. At 99 lb this dog needs about 2,186 kcal a day — roughly 40 lb of kibble a month — so brand and tier matter more than for a smaller dog: $1,293 to $1,574 a year across the standard kibbles we priced ($1,472 at the median), and several times that on fresh food. Insurance is the next line at 23%.

With a top-20 registration rank, breeders, breed-specific rescues and groomers who know the coat are easy to find. Males run about 11 lb heavier than females, which is enough to move a male into a higher parasite-prevention band — the panel's weight setting matters here. A high energy rating puts the calorie factor at 1.8× resting energy. The AKC quotes 9–12 years for the breed; the study median used here (8.1) is lower, because it counts every dog under veterinary care rather than a well-kept ideal.

The smooth coat is the cheap part of owning a Cane Corso: no clipping, an occasional bath, and a brush that lasts years. Grooming is 1% of the total at $24 a year.

First-year total: $4,502. Beyond the running costs that includes spay or neuter ($457 at Texas prices) and the puppy vaccine series with its extra visits. A giant-breed puppy outgrows everything: crate, bed, collar and harness are all bought at least twice, so treat the $230 first-month list as the first of two rounds.

The median lifespan of 8.1 years (a study of 584,734 UK dogs) is short, which keeps the lifetime total at $29,195 even though the yearly cost is above average. Only about 0 of those years are senior years, each adding $-78 in extra check-ups and bloodwork.
