A Bulldog — 50–50 lb for males and 40–40 lb for females, non-sporting group, a top-ten breed by 2025 AKC registrations — costs a typical owner in Texas about $2,718 a year, or $1,643 to $2,843 depending on food, grooming and insurance. That is 7% below the $2,927 average for medium breeds; the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is the cheapest in the group and the Portuguese Water Dog the dearest.

With a small appetite — 1,076 kcal a day, about 20 lb of kibble a month, $724 a year — the fixed costs dominate: insurance is the single biggest line at 30% of the total at the US average accident-and-illness premium, adjusted for Texas. Turn it off in the panel and vet & preventive takes over at 29%.

With a top-20 registration rank, breeders, breed-specific rescues and groomers who know the coat are easy to find. Males run about 10 lb heavier than females, which is enough to move a male into a higher parasite-prevention band — the panel's weight setting matters here.

The smooth coat is the cheap part of owning a Bulldog: no clipping, an occasional bath, and a brush that lasts years. Grooming is 1% of the total at $24 a year.

First-year total: $3,671. Beyond the running costs that includes spay or neuter ($457 at Texas prices) and the puppy vaccine series with its extra visits. Medium dogs are the sweet spot for gear — $160 covers a crate, bed and walking kit, and none of it needs replacing as the puppy grows.

The median lifespan of 9.8 years (a study of 584,734 UK dogs) is short, which keeps the lifetime total at $27,876 even though the yearly cost is below average. Only about 2 of those years are senior years, each adding $159 in extra check-ups and bloodwork.

Primary-care records for Bulldogs show skin fold dermatitis in 6.7%, prolapsed nictitating membrane gland in 5.7%, mandibular prognathism in 2.1% of dogs in a year. None of these is unusual for a dog of this size, which is one reason the breed's costs stay close to its group.
